Birthday portraits for tweens

Children’s portraiture can be tricky for a number of reasons, I mean, besides trying to coax a smile out of an active two year old.   Finding fresh ideas that are also age appropriate is always one of the biggest challenges I face.  Parents, particularly parents of tween girls, will recognize this struggle I think. If portraits for tweens are difficult, then birthday portraits for tweens are especially so!  At this stage girls are so eager to grow up, and our culture inundates them with so many messages about how they should look and act while they learn, explore and grow.

I take great care in choosing sets and poses that are both age appropriate and fun and I have to say, this set with Miss L was extremely fun.  I laughed so much on this set that my cheeks hurt afterwards.  The set wasn’t elaborate because there was no need for an intricate set (sometimes less IS more!).  We had three dozen balloons from the great folks at Party Mania by the studio, a couple crates to sit on, a glass and a jug of strawberry milk.  That’s it.  That’s all we needed for some totally fun images of a really sweet young lady.

Looking forward to seeing you again Miss L.

I absolutely love the joy in her eyes.  The look on her face when I told her to go ahead and make a mess was just priceless!
