I have some cool news to share today!
I’m thrilled to be part of a really wonderful new book Capturing Love: The Art of Lesbian & Gay Wedding Photography. My work has been included in this new book, selected from among “thousands of candidates”. I’m honored to be in the company of 37 other photographers from 19 states, Canada, Italy and the U.K. (I’m the only Maryland photographer appearing in the book!)
As many of us know, when it comes to wedding portraits, what works for heterosexual couples may not work for same-sex couples. This first of it’s kind book is a new visual guide by wedding photographer Thea Dodds of Authentic Eye Photography, and same-sex wedding pioneer Kathryn Hamm of GayWeddings.com,
Besides absolutely beautiful wedding images the book provides concrete examples of less conventional wedding portraits as well as new and different versions of more conventional wedding imagery along with detailed commentary from the authors. This book provides much needed support to wedding photographers and students who must rethink the “rules” of traditional wedding and engagement portrait posing in order to better serve all couples in today’s diverse wedding market.
Kathryn Hamm says “Capturing Love would not have been possible without the generous contributions and talents of the many photographers who were willing to share their work with us. We are incredibly grateful to Kat for joining us on this special journey and thrilled to showcase her work. We hope Capturing Love inspires every photographer shooting a same-sex wedding to think outside the box, and to create photos that truly capture the one-of-a-kind magic present at each couple’s wedding day.”
This book is essential, especially for photographers in Maryland. With the recent legal changes our industry, we will see an increase in same-sex couples who have incredible stories that should be documented as beautifully and competently as any other couple.
Thea Dodds says “The images we selected from Kat were culled from among thousands of candidates. But Kat’s represented beautifully the answer to three simple but important questions: Are these images authentic? Do these images reflect intimacy? Are these images believable? For any couple–straight or gay–an engagement or wedding portrait should elicit a ‘yes’ to all three questions, as Kat’s images did. That combination of authenticity, intimacy, and believability will be different for every couple, and the wide range of photos of same-sex couples in Capturing Love illustrates just how diverse wedding portraiture can, and should, be.”
Capturing Love is available now in a limited release via Lulu.com, and in nationwide release March 2013. I’ll be sure to post links to Amazon and all other retailers once this is fully released!
I owe an extra special thanks to the fabulous couple who agreed so graciously to share their wedding images for others to learn from (and admire!). Ladies, thank you for trusting me with your memories, and watch the mail for your own copy of the book!
