Alice in Wonderland – Baltimore Child Photography

I adored the silliness of the story of Alice and Wonderland as a child and never thought much beyond the funny fantasy portrayed in the many movie versions. I likely created some fantastical variations of Alice’s world with my own childhood playmates, but I wasn’t compelled to pick up the book again until university.

Studying the work of English author Lewis Carroll as an adult is like reading a whole other book. On the surface the story is that of a girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole under a tree and into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures.  While it is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre, the story is packed full of symbolism,  caricatures based on real life, and life lessons that may only be apparent when reading the book as a teen or adult.

Alice is 12 years old in the books. Knowing this, an adult reader can not help but wonder how much of the story speaks to growing up. Navigating the teen years can seem like being under the thumb of a raving Queen of Hearts, and chasing that darn White Rabbit can symbolize any number of challenges a teen may face.  Falling through a looking glass, and down a rabbit hole… well who hasn’t felt like THAT as emotions, relationships, and life gets turned upside down between childhood and adulthood.

For this session I set out with Alice in Wonderland as an inspiration and I made sure that the styling fit with the casual, modern, “let’s pretend” feel of our previous White Rabbit session.  I used a darker, denser, more saturated color palette and style than I normally produce and I made sure to plan a dozen “must have” images in advance.

As it turned out, the pre-planning served us well.  From first image to last we had exactly 26 minutes before the park closed and the skies opened up on us!  Linzie absolutely rocked the session, don’t you think?
